UBC Undergraduate Students

We typically take on 1-2 new undergraduate trainees per year. We ask that undergraduate students first volunteer for a short period (typically a term) to allow us to assess responsibility, research potential, and fit. This is particularly important for us as we work with infectious viruses and radioisotopes, and hence undergraduate trainees must be responsible, able to work safely in a complex work environment, and must work well with the team. Only once this is established, are we able to commit to credited research projects or summer studentships.
Interested applicants should provide their CV, transcripts (unofficial is fine), as well as information about their research interests and career aspirations. Please send your application to selena.sagan@ubc.ca with a subject line containing your name, the position you are applying for, and the term, i.e. John Doe (Undergraduate Applicant): Fall 2023. Within the first few weeks of the term, we will select a few of the top candidates for an interview with the team. One to two candidates will then be selected to join the Sagan Lab. Only complete applications will be considered. Due to the high volume of applicants we receive, not everyone will be invited for an interview.

Graduate Students

We typically take on 1-2 new Graduate Students (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in the Fall term (September) of each year. Applicants typically apply between July and November (9-14 months) in advance of the start date, and provide their CV (including contact information for 3 references), transcripts (unofficial is fine), as well as information about their research interests, career aspirations and why they are interested in working in the Sagan Lab. Please send your application to selena.sagan@ubc.ca with a subject line containing your name, the position you are applying for (M.Sc. or Ph.D), the term, AND your favorite ice cream flavor, i.e. John Doe (M.Sc. Applicant): Fall 2023 – Rocky road. Only complete applications will be considered.

Due to the high volume of applicants we receive, only the top candidates will be selected for an interview. Candidates selected will first have an informal interview over Zoom with Dr. Sagan (1 h). Subsequently, those candidates that make it past the initial interview will meet one-on-one and in small groups with members of our research team (Zoom or in-person, where possible). Candidates with formal research experience will be invited to present their previous research (based on M.Sc. or industry research, if applicable). References will be contacted during the process. Finally, candidates selected by the research group are invited to visit (if possible) prior to joining the research team.

Postdoctoral Fellows

We typically take on 1 new Postdoctoral Fellow per year on a rolling basis (start dates are flexible). Applicants typically apply between 6-12 months in advance, and provide their CV (including contact information for 3 references), transcripts (unofficial is fine), a summary of their skills and research experience to date, as well as information about their research interests, career aspirations and why they are interested in working in the Sagan Lab.  Please send your application to selena.sagan@ubc.ca with a subject line containing your name, the position you are applying for, the term, AND your favorite ice cream flavor, i.e. Jane Doe (PDF Applicant): Sep 2023 – Rocky road. Only complete applications will be considered.
